Turnkey Solar Power Plant Construction
Turnkey solar power plant construction: technical specification, design, approvals, installation, commissioning, and grid connection. EPC contractor and equipment manufacturer
Turnkey solar power plant construction is a full EPC cycle: from the technical specification and design documentation to installation, commissioning, and connection to the Unified Energy System (UES). LK Energy carries out every stage — design, approval of technical conditions, construction and installation works, commissioning, and putting the plant into operation. We work with industrial and commercial facilities ranging from 30 kW to several MW at voltages of 0.4–35 kV. This suits manufacturing plants, agricultural processing facilities, water utilities, retail and warehouse complexes, and business centers — anyone who needs their own generation and lower electricity costs.
What turnkey EPC means and who it suits
EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) means that a single contractor is responsible for the entire project life cycle — from engineering calculations and equipment procurement to construction and commissioning of the plant. The customer receives a finished facility and a single point of responsibility instead of a dozen separate contractors.
LK Energy is a Ukrainian EPC contractor and manufacturer of electrical switchgear equipment (a company operating since 2005, with its own switchgear factory since 2015). We design and manufacture switchgear equipment, build solar power plants, and connect them to the grids of distribution system operators (DSOs)/regional power companies. This solves a typical problem for industrial customers, where the designer, installers, and equipment manufacturer are different companies, each shifting responsibility to another.
Stages of solar power plant construction
- Technical specification (TS)
- We clarify the capacity, site, consumption pattern, and availability of grid connection technical conditions. We form the baseline data for design.
- Design. Detailed design (DD)
- Development of working documentation: single-line diagrams, module layout, inverter and transformer equipment (KTP — package transformer substation), cable routes, grounding, and relay protection.
- Environmental component — simplified for solar
- Unlike most renewable energy facilities, solar power plants are exempt from the mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure under Law of Ukraine No. 2059-VIII — this simplifies and speeds up approvals. For sites near nature reserves or the ecological network, we prepare an environmental impact statement (OVNS, per DBN A.2.2-1:2021, Ukrainian state building code) and other environmental materials as needed.
- Approvals
- Passing expert review, coordination with the DSO/regional power company, and obtaining permitting documents.
- Construction and installation works (CIW)
- Site preparation, foundations, installation of mounting structures and modules, cable laying, and installation of inverters and KTP.
- Commissioning works
- Testing of power equipment (including high-voltage equipment where applicable), configuration of inverters and relay protection, and load testing.
- Grid connection
- Handover of the facility to the distribution system operator (DSO/regional power company), commissioning, and start of generation.
We carry out the key stages — design, manufacturing of switchgear equipment, CIW, and commissioning — using our own engineering and installation resources. More on power supply design on a separate page.
Solar power plant design documentation
A quality design is the foundation of the entire construction process. A solar power plant design documentation package typically includes:
- Detailed design (DD)
- single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, PV module layout, solutions for transformer substations (KTP), cable networks, grounding, and relay protection.
- Environmental materials (as needed)
- solar power plants are generally not subject to mandatory EIA (Law No. 2059-VIII); for sensitive sites we prepare an OVNS section (per DBN A.2.2-1:2021) and related approvals.
- Cost estimates
- cost estimate documentation for materials, equipment, and works.
Case study: 4.95 MW industrial solar plant + BESS
LK Energy's largest completed project is an industrial solar power plant with a capacity of 4.95 MW with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The project went through the full EPC cycle: detailed design, approvals, CIW and commissioning, and grid connection. The BESS at the facility smooths the generation profile and stores surplus energy.
Why LK Energy
- Own equipment manufacturing
- we manufacture KTP, KTPN (package transformer substations, outdoor version), RP (distribution points), ATS (automatic transfer switch) cabinets, and relay protection panels for voltages of 0.4–35 kV; we do not depend on third-party switchgear suppliers.
- Around 100 solar power plants built
- from rooftop systems to the 4.95 MW industrial plant with BESS.
- Over 1,000 completed projects
- in electrical installation and switchgear equipment (own manufacturing since 2015) — experience behind every solar power plant.
- Full turnkey cycle
- design, approvals, CIW, commissioning, and connection within a single company.
- Compliance with standards
- works are carried out in accordance with DBN (state building codes), DSTU (Ukrainian national standards), and IEC, in compliance with electrical safety regulations and the requirements of local energy inspection authorities.

Frequently asked questions
How long does turnkey solar power plant construction take?
Timelines depend on capacity, connection complexity, and the approval process. We form an estimated schedule at the technical specification stage after assessing the site and technical conditions.
Is an EIA / OVNS required for a solar power plant?
Unlike most renewable energy facilities, solar power plants are exempt from the mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure under Law of Ukraine No. 2059-VIII — this simplifies approvals. However, for sites near nature reserves or the ecological network, an OVNS section (per DBN A.2.2-1:2021) or separate environmental approvals may be required — we determine the need at the design stage for the specific facility.
Can a solar power plant be connected right now?
This depends on the available capacity at the connection point and the grid operator's technical conditions. We check this at the outset — at the technical specification stage we request the technical conditions and assess available capacity. For self-consumption and active consumer schemes, grid constraints are generally lower than for full feed-in to the grid.
What is included in a solar power plant design?
A detailed design (DD) with single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, module layout, solutions for KTP, cable networks and grounding; cost estimate documentation; and, as needed, environmental materials (OVNS section per DBN A.2.2-1:2021).
What is the payback period for an industrial solar power plant?
A typical benchmark for Ukraine is 5–7 years for standard industrial configurations, depending on capacity, consumption pattern, electricity sales scheme (day-ahead market / self-consumption), presence of a BESS, and project CAPEX. We calculate the exact payback in a financial model tailored to the specific facility.
